Abstract
Julia Cooke’s profile introduces Synthesis Design + Architecture as an emerging Los Angeles practice using computation to achieve effects that are materially efficient, visually dynamic, and quietly expressive. Centered on Alvin Huang’s interest in “maximum variation through minimal effort,” the article moves from the digitally fabricated Chelsea Workspace and [C]Space Pavilion to projects in Bangkok, Shanghai, Calgary, and Beijing. It presents SDA’s synthesis of architectural design, material research, associative geometry, digital craft, and teaching as a model for an ambitious young practice.
